The Five Phases of Empathy™

Michael developed the model in 2020 and expanded it in The Power of Empathy, published by Chronicle Books. It has been refined since across 50+ companies, schools, and organizations. Five phases, practiced in order.

The five phases
1

The Language of Feelings

Emotional awareness, intelligence and resilience. Notice and name what’s present.

2

The Importance of Intention

Organizational and individual values alignment. Anchor choices in what you protect.

3

Channeling Purpose

Turning emotions into attention and focus. Considered response over reaction.

4

From Empathy to Impact

Community emotional awareness. Take perspective, build coalition, act.

5

Living With Abundance

From competition to focused innovation. Sustain the practice with vision.

Three types of empathy

We train empathy across all three of its forms

Practiced empathy means reading the moment so your response matches your intent.

Cognitive

Mind

Understanding how something looks from where someone else is standing.

Emotional / somatic

Body

Noticing what’s happening in you and in the room.

Affective

Mind, body, gut

Feeling with someone, then choosing your response.

What the practice produces

Where a practiced team ends up

The phases are the training. This is the chain they set off, and it is the reason organizations keep going past a single session.
